NORTH SHIELDS MAN HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE AFTER BRUTAL ASSAULT ON EX-GIRLFRIEND
A man identified as Terry Weir, aged 34, from North Shields, was involved in a severe assault on his former partner. The court heard that Weir had a history of violence and had previously been convicted 76 times, including for assaulting the same woman.
In this incident, he subjected the victim to a brutal attack, which included punching her about 20 times, biting her, and strangling her to the point she blacked out.
He continued to assault her as she tried to escape, following her into the street after she managed to break free.
During the attack, he also made threatening remarks, stating he would kill her if he went to jail.
The woman was injured with bite marks on her upper arm, and she was physically stamped on and strangled by Weir.
Despite the severity of his actions, Weir was given a 18-month suspended sentence for two years by Newcastle Crown Court.
Additionally, he was ordered to attend a six-month alcohol treatment program.
The court also noted that Weir had been issued a restraining order in 2023, yet he was found at the victim's home, causing further concern.
The victim did not support the prosecution, and Weir's defense attorney claimed that Weir had the opportunity to work on a fishing boat and was determined to turn his life around.
