TERENCE GIBNEY FROM GRIMSBY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRL IN DEVASTATING CASE
In December 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Terence Gibney, a 60-year-old businessman from the Grimsby area, who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl.Gibney, who owns a fish processing company in Grimsby, faced charges of three counts of indecent assault and three counts of indecency with a child.
Despite denying the allegations, a jury found him guilty after a thorough trial at Grimsby Crown Court.
The prosecution, led by Gordon Stables, detailed the nature of the abuse, emphasizing that Gibney engaged in repeated acts of inappropriate touching and sexual behavior directed at the young girl.
The court heard that during the incidents, the victim was left entirely at Gibney’s mercy, with no means of escape or protection.
The court was told that the abuse was not a one-time event but a series of repeated offenses that caused significant harm.
Following the conviction, the victim spoke emotionally about her experience, expressing relief and a sense of liberation.
She stated, “I have had a weight lifted off my shoulders” after speaking to police.
She also voiced her frustration and pain, saying, “I am sick of it.
I have had enough.
He touched me.
He should not have been touching me at that age.” Her words underscored the devastating impact of Gibney’s actions on her life.
During sentencing, Recorder Peter Makepeace QC described the offenses as “utterly devastating” for the victim.
He highlighted that Gibney’s actions were an attempt to exploit a vulnerable child who was completely at his mercy.
The judge emphasized that such conduct was entirely indefensible and warranted severe punishment.
As part of his sentence, Gibney was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent any future offenses.
Additionally, he was subjected to a lifetime restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim or her family.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of abuse and the importance of justice for victims in the Grimsby community.
