TENIAS MUNGWARI SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR KIDNAPPING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN NORWICH
In a significant case that has shocked the Norwich community, Tenias Mungwari, a 47-year-old man residing on Sleaford Green in Norwich, has been handed down an 18-year prison sentence for a series of heinous crimes, including kidnapping and multiple sexual assaults. The sentencing took place at Norwich Crown Court on Friday, 25 August 2023, following a lengthy trial that revealed disturbing details about the events.
Prior to the trial, Mungwari had entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
However, after a two-week trial that concluded on 30 June 2023, the jury found him guilty of kidnapping a woman, sexually assaulting her by penetration, and committing two additional counts of sexual assault.
The court also imposed an extended license period of seven years, meaning that upon release, Mungwari will be subject to strict supervision for an extended period.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure aimed at monitoring his activities and preventing further offenses.
The case centers around an incident that occurred in the early hours of October 30, 2022.
On that night, a woman was walking home after a night out in Norwich City Centre.
As she made her way through the city, she was approached by Mungwari, who was driving a vehicle.
Without warning, he kidnapped her, forcing her into his car and driving her back to his residence.
Once there, Mungwari subjected her to serious sexual assaults that lasted for several hours, causing significant trauma and distress.
Following the assault, the woman managed to escape from the address and sought help from members of the public.
Thanks to their assistance, she was safely taken home.
Law enforcement officials launched an extensive investigation, including CCTV footage analysis, which played a crucial role in identifying her movements and the vehicle involved.
The CCTV footage clearly showed Mungwari’s vehicle, registered to him, following the woman as she walked in Norwich City Centre.
The footage also captured Mungwari stopping at a red traffic light, turning his head to observe the woman, and then turning his vehicle around to follow her.
Further inquiries confirmed that Mungwari was responsible for the kidnapping and assault.
The investigation revealed that he had been circling Norwich City Centre in his vehicle when he spotted the woman.
His actions, captured on CCTV, demonstrated premeditation and intent, culminating in the kidnapping and assault that caused widespread concern.
In addition to the Norwich incident, Mungwari was also convicted of a separate, disturbing offense involving a female patient suffering from a mental illness.
In October 2020, he engaged in a sexual relationship with her while acting in a professional capacity as her carer.
On 13 June 2023, Norwich Crown Court found him guilty of three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a female suffering from a mental disorder, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior.
The sentencing reflects the gravity of Mungwari’s crimes and the impact on his victims.
The Norwich community and law enforcement officials hope that the lengthy prison term and lifetime registration will serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar offenses, emphasizing the importance of justice and protection for vulnerable individuals.
