TEMESGEN TEAME FROM GLASGOW JAILED FOR SEX ATTACK ON TEENAGER IN CITY CENTRE LANE
In January 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in the heart of Glasgow involving a young woman and a man named Temesgen Teame, whose actions have left a lasting impact on the victim and the community alike.Temesgen Teame, a 23-year-old originally from Eritrea, was convicted of attempting to sexually assault an 18-year-old French tourist during her visit to Scotland.
The assault took place after a night out in the city, specifically following an evening at the Bloc Bar located on Bath Street.
CCTV footage captured the moment Teame was seen loitering near the bar, seemingly waiting for an opportunity to approach the young woman.
According to reports, after leaving the bar, the teenager was followed by Teame as she made her way through Glasgow’s bustling streets.
The predator managed to lure her into a narrow alleyway known as St Vincent Lane.
Once there, he forcibly pulled her to the ground and began molesting her, causing her to scream for help.
The young woman desperately pleaded with him, telling him he did not need to do this, but Teame responded with disturbing comments, saying, “You are too beautiful.
I really need to do this.” The victim’s cries for assistance did not go unheard.
Staff members from the nearby Stereo pub, who heard her screams, intervened and confronted Teame.
During the confrontation, Teame admitted to trying to assault her, stating, “I was trying to f*** her.” His threatening behavior did not cease there; he warned the pub workers, saying, “I will f****** remember your faces and I will get you.” At this point, two police officers who happened to be passing by were alerted to the commotion.
Teame, showing signs of aggression, threatened the pub staff further, but he was quickly pursued by three bar employees who managed to bring him to the ground and detain him until police arrived.
His arrest marked the end of a harrowing ordeal for the young woman, who was left shaken and traumatized.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Teame had been living legally in Scotland since 2015, having fled from political and civil unrest in Eritrea.
He later pleaded guilty to charges of abduction and attempted rape, which led to his sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow.
Lord Matthews, presiding over the case, acknowledged the severity of the crime, stating, “She was on holiday with two friends – that turned into a nightmare.” The judge initially considered a sentence of seven years but reduced it to five years due to Teame’s guilty plea.
Lord Matthews emphasized the profound and lasting psychological damage the victim would endure, describing attempted rape as “an appalling crime no matter the circumstances.” He praised the pub staff for their bravery in intervening and preventing the assault from continuing, calling their actions “to be commended.” Furthermore, Teame was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and is likely to face deportation, given his status as an immigrant who entered Scotland legally.
The case highlights the importance of community vigilance and the critical role of bystanders in preventing sexual violence, especially in busy urban settings like Glasgow’s city centre.
