TAYLOR ROWLAND OF CRAMLINGTON SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL REPEATED SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND HARMFUL BEHAVIOR
Taylor Rowland, from Cramlington in Northumberland, described himself as a 'monstrous person' and 'despicable' after he admitted to carrying out multiple sexual attacks. The court heard that Rowland subjected his victim to a campaign of rape, which in some cases involved violence, including holding her down and punching her.
The victim expressed her belief that he intentionally hurt her and believed he 'enjoyed making me suffer.' Newcastle Crown Court was told that Rowland, 28, of Cateran Way, Cramlington, pleaded guilty to eight counts of rape.
He has now been sentenced to over 17 years in prison—specifically, 17 years and eight months—and will be subject to an indefinite restraining order along with registration as a sex offender.
Judge Stephen Earl emphasized the severity of the case.
Upon his arrest, Rowland fully admitted his guilt, describing his actions as 'despicable' and acknowledging that his behavior had been 'monstrous.' During police interviews, he expressed deep shame and admitted to incidents the victim had not disclosed.
Prosecutor Alec Burns noted, 'This is a campaign of rape.
She said he was enjoying making her suffer.' Mr.
Burns further revealed that Rowland suggested suicide methods to his victim, including jumping from the Tyne Bridge, and told her to make sure she committed the act over the road.
Rowland reflected on his actions, telling police he was 'deeply ashamed' and recognizing how terrible he had been, stating she did not deserve any of it.
The victim delivered a poignant impact statement in court, describing the long-lasting effect of the abuse and expressing doubt about ever fully healing.
Defense lawyer Gavin Doig acknowledged Rowland's accountability, stating, 'He fully accepts how monstrously he behaved towards her.' Doig explained that Rowland, who suffers from narcissistic personality disorder diagnosed in adolescence, has shown unusual honesty with the authorities—something he characterized as rare.
He added, 'He has come to court prepared for a lengthy period of custody, having bravely admitted his responsibility and fronted up about his behaviour.
He has grown up now and has to pay the price for his past actions, and he is ready to do that.'
