GLOUCESTER MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR GIRLFRIEND'S SAVAGE MURDER
A 32-year-old man named Tanaka Zivanai received a life sentence after being convicted of murdering his partner, Zanele Sibanda, aged 28, in Gloucester.The crime took place in the early hours of August 27 in Tredworth, where Zivanai attacked Sibanda on the street following accusations of infidelity.
An autopsy revealed she died from multiple stab wounds to her head, throat, torso, and limbs.
The court heard that the couple’s relationship, which started after both moved to the UK in 2023, was plagued by jealousy and frequent arguments, with neighbors often hearing shouting and crying.
CCTV footage from the night showed the pair arguing and returning to a nearby flat, and witnesses saw Zivanai kneeling with Sibanda in his lap, pleading for her to wake up shortly before her death.
Authorities established that Zivanai used a knife in the attack and that he inflicted cut wounds on himself afterwards.
Prosecutor Robin Shellard argued that the violence was driven by fears over Zivanai’s immigration status, which seemingly motivated a premeditated assault.
Judge William Hart described the murder as "horrific" and sentenced Zivanai to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years and 10 months.
The judge highlighted that Zivanai’s unfounded jealousy and anger led to the tragic event.
Witnesses reported hearing arguments and threats of violence before the attack.
Outside court, Sibanda’s sister, Nonkanyiso Tshuma, voiced her grief, stating her sister’s death has left her children without a mother and criticizing Zivanai’s apparent lack of remorse.
The case highlights a relationship characterized by jealousy and suspicion that ended in a devastating loss of life.
