A disturbing incident involving a BB gun has brought to light the reckless behavior of two individuals from Maidstone, with serious implications for a young child present during the event. The incident occurred in October 2018, when Jordan Towner, aged 25 and a resident of Springwood Road, Barming, was seen playing with a BB gun while visiting relatives in Maidstone. During this time, he aimed the weapon in the direction of a young child, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, but was present at the scene.
According to court reports, Jordan claimed that he was aiming at the child's nappy, suggesting that his intent was to target the diaper area of the toddler. However, the pellet from the BB gun struck the child in the leg, causing no physical injury but resulting in the child crying out in distress. The incident was witnessed by others at the scene, and the child's reaction underscored the seriousness of the reckless act.
Both Jordan and Tamara Towner, aged 21 and a resident of York Road, Maidstone, were subsequently arrested and brought before Maidstone Magistrates Court. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Tamara had also fired the BB gun, claiming she was aiming at a toy car at the time. The initial charges against the pair included cruelty to a child; however, on the day of their trial, the Crown Prosecution Service added a charge of common assault, which both defendants admitted.
Prosecutor Eleanor Scott-Davies explained that the Towner duo was visiting relatives when Jordan began playing with the BB gun he had brought along. The court heard that the gun was fired in the general direction of the child, with Jordan stating he was aiming for the child's nappy. Tamara, who was present at the scene, also admitted to firing the weapon, further complicating the case.
Throughout the court proceedings, Jordan appeared nervous, biting his nails as his barrister, Philip Sinclair, described him as
