Burton-on-Trent Rapist
Sydney Showell, aged 71, has received a prison sentence of 23 years and five months after being convicted on multiple sexual offense charges against children. Following a trial at Stafford Crown Court, Showell was found guilty of two counts of raping a boy, four counts of sexually assaulting a child, and five counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. The abuse took place years ago, and the victims displayed remarkable bravery by coming forward to report his actions. Showell initially denied the allegations but was charged by Staffordshire Police in March of the previous year. He was also convicted of additional charges, including causing a child to view sexual activity, engaging in sexual acts with a child, and attempting to do so. As a result of his conviction, Showell has been placed on the Sexual Offender’s Register for life. Detective Constable Gemma Szalapski praised the courage of the survivors, saying, “This result would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the tremendous courage and bravery of the survivors in coming forward and telling us what Showell had done.” She also reiterated the department’s commitment to supporting survivors of such crimes, regardless of when the incidents occurred.
