A 35-year-old man named Suraj Acharya from Artana Street, Belfast, has been fined £250 after pleading guilty to stalking a woman between November 2024 and January 2025.
Acharya also was ordered to pay £750 in compensation to the victim for multiple incidents of watching and following her, including sending messages in which he claimed to be 'addicted' and 'obsessed' with her.
According to court reports, Acharya told the woman he was sleeping among her bins to 'feel close to her.' Prosecutors described the unwanted contact, which involved texting, watching her from a distance during her work hours, and following her to social venues.
He also boarded the same bus as the woman and hung around outside her home for most of the night.
The court heard Acharya showed up at her gym after she had left because she felt very unsettled by his presence.
Although his actions did not escalate into physical contact, a restraining order was imposed prohibiting him from contacting the victim or approaching within 200 meters of her residence.
