SUFIYAN ABDULRAHMAN FROM COVENTRY JAILED FOR 13 YEARS AFTER RAPE AND ASSAULTS

In December 2017, a disturbing case unfolded in Coventry involving Sufiyan Abdulrahman, a man who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young woman he had helped bring into the United Kingdom under false pretenses.

The incident came to light after the victim, who was a teenager at the time, confided in a helper at her English language class about the abuse she had endured.

Following a thorough trial at Warwick Crown Court, the jury swiftly reached a verdict, taking only an hour and a half to find Abdulrahman guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of common assault.

The court subsequently sentenced him to a prison term of 13 years and mandated that he register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Prosecutor Robert Underwood provided context about Abdulrahman’s background, revealing that he had arrived in the UK from Ethiopia several years prior and was granted leave to remain in the country for five years.

The case centered around a young woman, also in her teens, who entered the UK through Heathrow Airport earlier that year using a false identity.

She was then taken to a residence in Coventry, where the subsequent events unfolded.

Mr.

Underwood explained that a plan had been orchestrated to facilitate her entry into the UK under the guise of pursuing education—an opportunity she believed she would not have back in her home country.

To obtain a visa, she was coerced into producing false documents, including an identity that belonged to someone in her twenties.

She was complicit in this process, which was part of the scheme to bring her into the country.

Once in Coventry, however, her situation deteriorated dramatically.

She became a victim of physical abuse and, more grievously, repeated sexual assault.

Abdulrahman, who had been involved in her entry into the UK, made a demand for sex at the address where she was staying shortly after her arrival.

When she refused, he assaulted her physically, beating her as a form of coercion.

On the following day, Abdulrahman again demanded sex, and this time, under duress and after being beaten, she submitted.

This submission was not consent, and Abdulrahman proceeded to rape her.

The prosecutor emphasized that the assaults did not end there; Abdulrahman continued to sexually assault and physically abuse her on multiple occasions afterward.

The victim, seeking help, began attending English classes and eventually confided in one of the class helpers about her ordeal.

She disclosed the abuse she had suffered since arriving in Coventry, which led to her being taken to a safe location away from Abdulrahman.

The police were promptly contacted, and Abdulrahman was arrested the following day.

During police interviews, Abdulrahman remained silent in response to questions.

In a prepared statement, he claimed to believe that the young woman was in her mid-20s and insisted that their sexual encounters had been consensual.

He denied ever assaulting or forcing her into sex.

He reiterated these assertions during his trial testimony.

However, the prosecution dismissed his claims as baseless, and the jury unanimously agreed with the prosecution’s assessment, finding Abdulrahman guilty of all charges.

As a result of his conviction, Abdulrahman was sentenced to 13 years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, marking a significant legal victory for justice and victim protection in Coventry.
