STUART MULEN GROOMS 12-YEAR-OLD BOY IN SWANSEA VIA ONLINE GAMING AND SOCIAL MEDIA
In November 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving a 43-year-old man from Swansea who engaged in the sexual grooming of a young boy he met through an online gaming platform.The incident highlights the dangers lurking in the digital world, especially for impressionable children who spend significant time online.
Stuart Mullen, a resident of Heol Gwyrosydd, Penlan, Swansea, initially made contact with the 12-year-old boy while they were both playing the popular video game Grand Theft Auto on the Xbox Live platform.
Their interaction began innocuously but soon took a sinister turn as Mullen suggested they move their conversations to a more private setting via Facebook messaging.
Posing as a 22-year-old bisexual chef, Mullen engaged the boy in a deceptive online persona, which facilitated the grooming process.
Prosecutor Craig Jones told Swansea Crown Court that once the two started communicating privately on Facebook, the tone of their exchanges became increasingly sexual.
Mullen began requesting the boy, who was from the Liverpool area, to send photographs of himself in his school uniform.
The requests escalated to the boy being asked to send intimate images, which Mullen then used to manipulate and exploit him.
During their conversations, Mullen expressed affection, telling the boy he loved him and referring to him as “my sexy boy.” The grooming extended over several months, during which the two also engaged in live video chats.
Mullen claimed his camera was defective as a means of concealing his identity from the young victim.
The situation came to light when the boy’s mother discovered troubling text messages on her son’s phone and promptly contacted Merseyside Police.
The police investigation uncovered the extent of Mullen’s misconduct.
In court, Mullen pleaded guilty to inciting a boy under 13 to perform sexual acts.
The court also heard a victim impact statement from the boy’s mother, who described how the grooming had negatively affected her son’s behavior and caused difficulties at school.
She expressed her outrage at the fact that an adult could engage with a child in such a sickening manner, emphasizing the profound and lasting damage inflicted.
It was revealed that Mullen had a lengthy criminal history, with 12 previous convictions for 22 offences.
His criminal record includes a juvenile conviction for buggery at Port Talbot Magistrates Court, as well as convictions for indecent assaults on two boys under 14, committed in a shop in Morriston.
Additionally, he has a conviction for attempted robbery.
A probation report classified him as a dangerous offender, underscoring the severity of his criminal behavior.
Judge Geraint Walters described Mullen’s actions as “truly wicked” and emphasized the lifelong impact on his victim.
The judge highlighted the increasing prevalence of online interactions among young people and warned of predators lurking “in the shadows,” waiting to exploit vulnerable children.
He stated that such behavior effectively steals childhood innocence and causes irreparable harm.
As a result, Mullen was sentenced to a 10-year extended prison term.
The sentence comprises six years of actual custody, followed by four years on extended licence, reflecting the court’s serious view of his crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to society.
