STUART MERRY SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IN PRISON IN PETERBOROUGH FOLLOWING MULTIPLE SEX OFFENDER BREACHES
Stuart Merry, a known sex offender residing in Peterborough, has once again found himself behind bars, marking his third incarceration within an 18-month span. The recent arrest and subsequent sentencing highlight ongoing concerns about his compliance with legal restrictions and his potential threat to the community.
On October 9th, authorities from the northern Public Protection Unit (PPU), a specialized team dedicated to monitoring individuals convicted of sexual offences after their release, apprehended Merry at the entrance of HMP Littlehey.
His arrest came as a result of ongoing surveillance and concerns over his adherence to legal restrictions placed upon him following previous convictions.
Merry, who is 41 years old, has a disturbing history that dates back to 2010 when he was convicted of indecent assault on a child and gross indecency with a child.
These offences led to a five-year prison sentence and his placement on the Sex Offenders Register.
Despite his imprisonment, authorities continued to monitor his activities closely, and in 2018, the courts approved a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
This order came with strict conditions aimed at preventing further offences, including restrictions on contacting any other known registered sex offenders without police approval.
However, Merry’s compliance with these conditions was repeatedly compromised.
In July 2019, he was recalled to prison after being released on licence, owing to his failure to demonstrate good behavior.
After a six-month period of incarceration, he was released again in December of the same year.
His struggles with following the rules persisted, as in April 2020, he was sentenced to 14 months for violating his SHPO on three separate occasions.
His breaches included using a library computer to access the internet, making phone calls to another registered sex offender, and deleting call logs from his mobile device.
Despite these violations, Merry continued to breach his conditions while serving his latest sentence.
Prison phone records revealed that he dialed the home telephone number of his known sex offender acquaintance on seven occasions spanning from March to August 2020.
Such continued contact was a direct violation of the restrictions imposed upon him and demonstrated a troubling pattern of non-compliance.
Following his most recent release on October 9th, officers quickly moved to arrest Merry and charged him the next day with two counts of breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Constable Natalie Hebdon from the northern PPU underscored Merry's high-risk status, stating, “Merry is a high-risk offender who has been monitored extremely closely by the Public Protection Unit for a number of years.
Since his first conviction in 2001 for gross indecency at an outdoor paddling pool, he has repeatedly been in and out of prison for various breaches of conditions intended to protect children and the community.” Merry appeared before Peterborough Crown Court on Tuesday, December 22nd, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
DC Hebdon emphasized that the authorities would continue their close supervision of Merry, including regular visits to his home and checks on his electronic devices.
She added, “Any further offending will be taken seriously and will be brought before the courts.
Our priority is to protect vulnerable members of our community from individuals like Merry who have demonstrated they pose a continued threat.”
