EDINBURGH MAN STUART BETTS CAUGHT IN POLICE STING OVER CHILD SEXUAL PREDATION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Edinburgh, Stuart Betts, a 49-year-old man and father of two, was apprehended after attempting to engage in the sexual exploitation of local schoolgirls through online communications. The incident came to light during a police operation aimed at dismantling online child abuse networks, revealing Betts's disturbing intentions and actions.
According to reports presented at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Betts believed he was communicating with a fellow predator when he exchanged messages and images.
In reality, he was in contact with an undercover officer from Police Scotland, known by the alias “Steve D,” who was working covertly to gather intelligence on individuals seeking to sexually abuse minors.
The court heard that Betts’s conversations included highly inappropriate and alarming content.
It was revealed that last June, Betts initiated contact with the officer through a chat channel called Rabbit, using the username “Bi Perv M.” During their exchanges, Betts sent a non-indecent photograph featuring two children and an adult, claiming that the children, who he stated resided in Edinburgh, were the subjects of his sexual interest.
Over the course of their communication, Betts also transmitted six additional images of the girls, aged 17 and 14, dressed in school uniforms, which he described as non-indecent but nonetheless disturbing.
Throughout their interactions, Betts made numerous sexual comments about the girls, expressing a desire for them to be attacked in their beds by a gang.
Prosecutor Anna Robertson highlighted the severity of Betts’s attitude, noting that he exhibited a strong hatred and aggression towards girls aged between 13 and 15.
She further explained that Betts suggested that the police find other predators to abuse the children, indicating a disturbing willingness to facilitate or encourage further exploitation.
Betts’s conversations also included boastful remarks about spending a weekend engaged in sexual acts while imagining the girls being abused.
It was established that he obtained the images of the Edinburgh girls from Facebook, raising concerns about the safety of social media platforms in protecting minors from predatory behavior.
Police investigations traced Betts’s IP address to his residence in the Duddingston area of Edinburgh.
During a search of his home, officers recovered a computer containing indecent images and pseudo-images of children.
Among these were four classified as Category A, the most severe level of child exploitation material.
Betts, who is married and has two sons, admitted to making aggressive, offensive, and sexualized remarks on social media, explicitly stating his desire to sexually abuse the two girls.
He also confessed to suggesting to others that they carry out similar acts against the minors.
The court heard that Betts’s actions and statements demonstrated a clear intent and desire to commit sexual offenses against children.
Sheriff Robert Fife deferred sentencing until the following month, during which Betts was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
His bail was continued, allowing him to remain free pending the next court appearance, as the case continues to unfold.
