STEWART POLSON AND DAVID SINCLAIR SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN EDINBURGH
Stewart Polson, aged 69, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after a historic and deeply disturbing series of child sexual abuse acts carried out at multiple locations across Edinburgh. His crimes spanned over a period of more than ten years and involved repeated indecent assaults, including rape, targeting vulnerable children for his own gratification.
The sentences reflect the grave nature of his offenses and the impact they have had on his victims.
Polson’s heinous acts included abusing two young girls and a boy at various houses within the Edinburgh area.
The abuse against these minors began when one girl was as young as six years old, and another was only eight when the assaults first occurred.
The extent of Polson’s brutality was highlighted during the court proceedings, where it was revealed that at one point he subjected a girl to rape.
His crimes did not cease there; he continued to commit sexual offenses in other locations, including a house in a village in Stirlingshire in 1993, where he indecently assaulted a seven-year-old girl, and later at an address in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, where he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl.
Together with his former partner, David Sinclair, aged 63, the two engaged in some of these acts, particularly against two young girls in the 1980s.
Sinclair, formerly residing on Abbey Street in Edinburgh, was convicted of participating in their abuse after denying a single charge of indecent assault but was ultimately found guilty by the court.
Sinclair was sentenced to 45 months in prison.
Court proceedings revealed that Sinclair’s involvement in the assaults was on multiple occasions, emphasizing the severity of his participation in this escalation of abuse.
During the sentencing at the High Court of Edinburgh, Judge Fiona Tait addressed Polson directly, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes.
She noted that the assaults against the victims significantly damaged their childhoods and remarked that, “because of the gravity of the crimes, a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal in your case.” The judge also pointed out that Polson maintained his innocence throughout the trial and displayed no remorse, despite the evidence presented by the victims, who showed remarkable courage in coming forward to share their experiences.
Polson’s defense attempted to dismiss the allegations, claiming he was living in Bournemouth, England, at the time of some incidents and that the accusations were unfounded.
However, the court upheld the guilty verdicts for nine charges, which included indecent conduct, indecent assault, and rape.
Polson had earlier denied these allegations but was found guilty after a thorough investigation.
Both men are now registered on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, reflecting their severe crimes and the threat they pose to public safety.
Detective Inspector Jonny Wright, who led the investigation, acknowledged the bravery of the victims in reporting such long-ago incidents and emphasized that their efforts enabled law enforcement to build a strong case against both offenders.
He underscored that sexual abuse can be reported regardless of how many years have passed, reaffirming the commitment to pursue justice for survivors whenever possible.
This case serves as a stark reminder that the passage of time does not diminish the severity of such crimes and that the justice system remains committed to holding perpetrators accountable, no matter how long ago the offenses took place.
The sentences handed down to Stewart Polson and David Sinclair in Edinburgh highlight society’s intolerance for child abuse and the importance of supporting victims to come forward and seek justice.
