HERTFORDSHIRE MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE AND COERCIVE CONTROL
Claudia believed she had found 'The One' when she started a relationship with her boyfriend, Steven Thiara.However, within just two weeks of moving into his family home in April 2019, Steven's behavior turned abusive.
Over the course of six weeks, Claudia endured severe physical and psychological abuse, including being repeatedly beaten, having her long black hair forcibly chopped off, and being made to drink his urine.
Steven also urinated on a plate of egg and chips and cruelly forced it into her mouth as he laughed.
He was convicted of coercive and controlling behavior in an intimate relationship and two counts of ABH.
Claudia said: "I felt the luckiest girl alive when I began a relationship with Steven.
But by the end of it, I was lucky to still be alive." The abuse escalated to physical violence, with Steven hitting her with fists, bottles, and objects, and controlling her every move.
On one occasion, he used scissors to cut her hair and caused lasting injuries.
Police reports state that he flew into violent rages over minor provocations, and his behavior included smashing her belongings and physically assaulting her, including stamping on her and choking her.
Eventually, after an eight-week ordeal and her injuries attracting police intervention, Steven was arrested.
He denied all charges initially, but was later found guilty of coercive control and assault causing actual bodily harm.
He was sentenced to four years in prison in January.
Claudia expressed relief that he is now off the streets and cannot harm anyone else, crediting police officers for their support.
She aims to raise awareness of domestic violence and hopes others will seek help.
Steven Thiara, 40, received a four-year prison sentence following his trial at St Albans Crown Court, where his various charges of rape, sexual assault, and false imprisonment were not proven.
His behavior exemplified domestic abuse, control, and brutality, with lasting physical and emotional scars for Claudia.
