WAKEFIELD PAEDOPHILE STEVEN OXLEY FLEES TO FRANCE FOR FIVE YEARS BEFORE BEING CAPTURED AT STANSTED

In August 2023, a disturbing case unfolded involving Steven Oxley, a convicted paedophile from Wakefield who managed to evade justice for an extended period before being apprehended.

Oxley's criminal history dates back to 2018 when he was convicted of making indecent images of children.

As part of his sentence, he received a 10-month jail term, which was suspended for two years, and was mandated to sign the sex offender register for a decade.

Despite these strict conditions, Oxley's compliance was short-lived.

Less than a month after his conviction, authorities from the public protection unit conducted a routine check at his residence on Horbury Road in Wakefield.

During this visit, they discovered that Oxley had already left the country, prompting an urgent investigation into his whereabouts.

Investigators quickly traced his movements and found that Oxley had boarded a ferry from Dover to Calais shortly after his departure.

It was initially believed that he might have returned briefly to the UK, but records confirmed that he had taken another ferry from Newhaven in East Sussex to Dieppe, France, on August 2, 2018.

This confirmed that Oxley had fled the UK to avoid the legal restrictions imposed upon him.

For nearly five years, Oxley remained in France, effectively evading law enforcement and the conditions of his sentence.

His freedom was finally curtailed when he was arrested at Stansted Airport on July 31 of this year.

The arrest was part of ongoing efforts to bring him to justice for his breach of legal obligations.

Oxley appeared in court via a video link from HMP Leeds, where he admitted to breaching the terms of the sex offender register and violating the conditions of his suspended sentence.

The court, presided over by Judge Andrew Stubbs KC, responded to his violations with a sentence of 12 months in prison.

This case highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring and apprehending offenders who attempt to evade justice by fleeing the country, and underscores the importance of international cooperation in such matters.
