Chadderton Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Chadderton, Oldham, Steven Marchington was apprehended after engaging in highly inappropriate and illegal behavior online, believing he was communicating with a minor. The incident unfolded when an undercover police officer infiltrated an online forum frequented by teenagers, posing as a 13-year-old girl named 'Holly'.
Marchington, who was 57 years old at the time in January 2018, believed he was chatting with a teenage girl when he performed a sexual act on himself during a webchat session. He used the username 'David UK' and claimed to be a 22-year-old man, although his actual age was significantly higher. The Manchester Crown Court was informed that during the conversation, Marchington expressed his sexual desires openly, describing himself as a 'horny guy'.
Prosecutor Daniel Caulder recounted that the undercover officer, posing as 'Holly', asked if Marchington minded if she was a 13-year-old girl. To this, he responded, 'as long as you are ok with it'. The court heard that during their exchange, Marchington mentioned he needed to relieve himself and continued to talk about performing a sex act on himself. He then proposed moving the conversation to a video chat on another website, but the officer declined.
Further disturbing behavior was observed in February 2018, when the same undercover officer was approached again by Marchington, still using the username 'David UK'. During this encounter, Marchington lifted his T-shirt, rubbed his nipples, and claimed they were becoming hard. He then performed a sex act on himself once more and proceeded to ask lewd questions, demonstrating a clear intent to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
Marchington's actions led to his arrest on March 4 of the following year. He subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual conversations with a child and one count of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child. It was revealed that he had prior convictions for indecent exposure in 1985 and 1999, with one of those convictions resulting in a caution.
During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Tom Gilbart described Marchington's conduct as 'horrendous'. He emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating, 'You say you are disgusted and ashamed and have a compulsion to expose yourself. You should be totally ashamed of yourself. Thankfully this was not a child.'
As a result, Marchington was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. The court also mandated that he sign the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years and imposed a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
