A man from Lydd has been handed an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual assault.
On the evening of June 12, 2023, a woman was invited to Steven Johnson’s residence.
After he offered her cannabis, Johnson took advantage of her vulnerability and committed a sexual assault.
Despite her repeated refusals, he prevented her from leaving his room and assaulted her.
The victim contacted a friend immediately afterward, who reported the incident to the police.
Officers responded to the scene and found Johnson inside the property on Manor Road.
He was detained by law enforcement and later faced charges of rape and sexual assault.
Johnson, aged 52, denied the allegations, but after a four-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court, the jury unanimously found him guilty.
On July 16, Johnson was sentenced to eight years in prison with a license period upon release.
Additionally, he was subject to a 15-year restraining order that bans any contact with the victim.
