STEVE HODGSON CAUGHT IN BARROW CHILD SEX OFFENDER SCANDAL
In a recent case that has shocked the local community, Steven Hodgson, a man residing in Barrow, was caught engaging in disturbing online conversations with individuals he believed to be underage girls.The incident unfolded in March of this year, when Hodgson, a 48-year-old laundry worker, initiated explicit sexual chats with what he thought were 12 and 13-year-old girls on social media platforms.
Unbeknownst to him, the profiles he was communicating with were actually created by members of two dedicated paedophile hunting groups, Soloceptors and Rising Against Online Predators.
These groups operate by posing as minors on social networking sites, with the profiles clearly stating the ages of 12 and 13 to lure potential offenders.
Hodgson, however, engaged these fake profiles in graphic and sexually explicit conversations, revealing his intentions and conduct.
The confrontation took place at Hodgson’s family home in Cleator Moor, where members of the hunting groups arrived unannounced.
The teams live-streamed the encounter to document the event, which was then followed by police officers arriving at the scene.
Hodgson was taken into custody and later appeared in court to face charges.
It was revealed that Hodgson had recently moved to Brewery Street in Barrow, having been compelled to leave his previous residence due to the ongoing investigation.
During the court proceedings, he expressed remorse and regret for his actions, acknowledging his responsibility for the offences.
Notably, Hodgson had no prior criminal record, which was taken into account during sentencing.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.
The case was heard by Recorder Ciaran Rankin at Carlisle Crown Court, who sentenced Hodgson to a three-year community order.
Additionally, Hodgson is required to adhere to a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely, register as a sex offender for five years, and complete a course of treatment and rehabilitation aimed at addressing his behaviour.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predatory behaviour.
