STEVEN HARRIS GROOMS AND ABUSES VULNERABLE TEEN IN TROWBRIDGE

In January 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Steven Harris, a 42-year-old man from Trowbridge, who was convicted of grooming and sexually abusing a vulnerable 15-year-old girl.

The incident highlighted the dangers posed by online predators and the devastating impact on young victims.

Harris had established a pattern of manipulative communication with the teenager through Facebook, sending numerous messages that grew increasingly sexual over the course of several months leading up to the assault.

The court was told that Harris’s online interactions were not only persistent but also calculated, aimed at lowering the girl’s defenses and normalizing inappropriate sexual conversations.

According to the prosecution, Sarah Jones, Harris’s messages were 'flirty' at first but quickly escalated in nature, revealing Harris’s awareness of the girl’s vulnerability.

The court heard that Harris knew the girl was unwell and feeling ill, which led her to go to bed early.

During this time, Harris visited her family’s home on St Thomas Road, where he committed the assault.

On that occasion, while the girl was resting in bed, Harris went upstairs to see her.

During their interaction, he began to rub her back and, inappropriately, placed his hand under the covers to touch her.

The court was told that Harris denied any physical contact, claiming that the messages were sent while he was drinking and that he had never touched her.

However, the jury at Swindon Crown Court did not believe his account, finding him guilty of the charges.

Prosecutor Miss Jones emphasized the profound impact the incident had on the young girl’s mental health, stating that she now struggles with trust issues and her overall well-being.

The court was also informed that Harris’s actions had led to significant personal consequences for him, including the loss of his job at Tesco and the breakdown of his marriage.

His wife had left him, and he was facing difficulties in maintaining contact with his children.

During the sentencing, Judge Robert Pawson condemned Harris’s behavior, describing it as a calculated and predatory attempt to exploit a vulnerable minor.

The judge reviewed 92 pages of Facebook messages, which he described as 'damning,' illustrating Harris’s deliberate effort to build trust with the girl and normalize sexual conversations over an extended period.

The judge stated that Harris’s actions were driven by a clear objective of engaging in sexual contact with the girl, knowing her age and vulnerability.

Judge Pawson sentenced Harris to six and a half years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his misconduct and the need to protect young individuals from such predatory behavior.

The case served as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation.
