FIFE SEX OFFENDER STEVEN HANLON SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR REPEATED RAPE OF YOUNG GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Fife, Steven Hanlon, a man with a disturbing history of sexual abuse, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of heinous crimes committed against a young girl.The offences took place over a period spanning from July 2014 to August of the previous year, during which Hanlon repeatedly subjected the girl to sexual assault and rape at various addresses within Fife.
Hanlon, who was 37 years old at the time of sentencing, had previously resided in Kelty, Fife.
His criminal actions came to light after the victim, who was only eight and nine years old at the time, confided in a woman about the abuse she had endured.
This disclosure prompted an investigation by police and social services, leading to a detailed interview with the young girl.
During her testimony, she recounted the repeated assaults and the trauma inflicted upon her.
Medical examinations confirmed the severity of the abuse, revealing that the girl had contracted a sexually transmitted infection as a direct result of Hanlon’s actions.
The evidence was overwhelming, and Hanlon later admitted to the sexual assaults and rapes during court proceedings.
At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Boyd addressed Hanlon directly, condemning his actions.
He stated, “It seems clear that you used this young girl as a sexual object for your own gratification.” The judge emphasized the gravity of the offences, describing them as “very serious sexual offences against a young girl.” In addition to the prison sentence, Lord Boyd ordered that Hanlon be subject to supervision for an additional three years following his release.
The judge acknowledged that Hanlon’s decision to plead guilty spared the victim from the trauma of giving evidence at trial, which could have prolonged her suffering.
Had Hanlon been convicted after a trial, the sentence would have been ten years imprisonment.
It was also noted that Hanlon, who was employed as a warehouse operative with Amazon, will be placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from further harm.
