Women who endured years of abuse have been commended for their courage in speaking out, leading to the conviction and imprisonment of Steven Douglas, a man from Fife.Douglas was found guilty of multiple offences committed against two women and was sentenced to four years behind bars during a court session held at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.
The conviction was the culmination of a detailed investigation by detectives from the Fife Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit, which began in 2014.
Authorities uncovered that Douglas had a pattern of violent crimes targeting women, spanning over a decade.
The two women involved disclosed that they had been subjected to various offences by Douglas, with incidents dating back to 1989 and continuing until 2001.
Most of these offences occurred within the town of Kirkcaldy, a key location in the case.
Detective Inspector Graeme Dursley, representing the Fife Division CID, expressed his support for the victims and emphasized the importance of their bravery.
He stated, “I believe that if the women he abused hadn’t been brave enough to give evidence against him then we would not have been able to secure a conviction.” Inspector Dursley further commented on the nature of the crimes, describing the prolonged suffering inflicted by Douglas as “deplorable.” He highlighted that the arrest and subsequent conviction were the results of a comprehensive police investigation.
The detective also extended his gratitude to the victims for their assistance and resilience throughout the legal process, noting that their cooperation was vital in achieving justice.
He added, “I hope that today’s sentence provides some measure of closure for the victims and allows them to begin to rebuild their lives.” The police remain committed to addressing all cases of domestic abuse and related violent offences.
Dursley reaffirmed the force’s dedication to working closely with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to ensure that offenders like Douglas are held accountable, reinforcing their ongoing commitment to justice and victim support.
