Mirfield Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community of Mirfield, Steven Brooke, a man well-known within the town and once serving as chairman of the Mirfield Tennis Club, has been sentenced to prison for serious child pornography offences. The incident came to light after a detailed investigation by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, which targeted Croatian websites suspected of hosting illegal content.

Brooke, aged 57 and residing on Priory Way in Mirfield, was arrested in August 2009 as part of this operation. Authorities discovered that he had downloaded a significant number of indecent images onto his personal computer equipment. During the police raid at his home, Brooke cooperated fully by handing over a box containing eight computer memory sticks. Subsequent forensic analysis revealed that these devices contained a total of 13,624 images, most of which were classified as level one, indicating the least severity. However, the court was informed that eight of these images were classified as level five, denoting the most graphic and disturbing content.

Prosecutor Andy Wills explained that Brooke initially claimed to have viewed pornography on adult sites, which then led him to access child pornography through links. He expressed remorse, stating that Brooke was ashamed of his actions and the consequences they had brought upon him. The court heard that Brooke had been aware of his illegal activities since the initial arrest in August 2009 and had cooperated with authorities from the outset.

In mitigation, Brooke’s legal representative, Mr. Robert Dawson, highlighted that his client had fully cooperated with police and had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. Dawson emphasized that Brooke had been burdened by this situation for over a decade and had made efforts to make amends, despite the shame he carried. The defense also pointed out that Brooke was an active member of the local community, particularly through his involvement with the Mirfield Tennis Club, where he served as chairman, although he was not involved in coaching children.

Ultimately, the court sentenced Steven Brooke to 18 weeks in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of seven years. A sexual offences prevention order was also imposed to prevent him from working with children in the future. As part of the court’s measures, Brooke’s computer equipment was destroyed to prevent further access to illegal content. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.
