STEVE BENNETT AND SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING IN MANCHESTER

A man named Steven Bennett, previously employed at a Tesco store in Manchester, has become the focus of a significant undercover police operation targeting online predatory behavior.

Bennett, 63 years old, was deliberately lured via an online sting into sending sexually explicit messages and images to what he believed were underage girls.

In reality, these were undercover officers operating fake profiles to catch individuals engaging in online grooming.

According to authorities, Bennett initiated contact by sending sexual communications to two online avatars, which had been created by police officers in the guise of young girls.

The police set up these profiles as part of a covert operation to identify and apprehend potential offenders.

Bennett’s actions quickly progressed from conversation to more inappropriate communications, as he sent explicit images of his erect penis to the fictitious children.

The disturbing exchanges indicated a clear attempt by Bennett to engage in inappropriate sexual conduct with minors.

The police, acting on the evidence gathered from the covert operation, subsequently conducted a raid at Bennett’s former residence located on Aberlady Road in Haddington.

This action took place in September last year.

It is believed that Bennett had been working at a Tesco supermarket within Haddington at the time of his offending, which adds a concerning element of former employment being linked to his illicit activities.

Following his arrest and the evidence collected, Steven Bennett was taken to court.

He appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier in the year, where he pleaded guilty to two charges of attempting to engage in indecent communication with minors.

Specifically, he admitted to attempting to contact two 12-year-old girls between December 2020 and September 2021.

These charges stemmed from his deliberate efforts to communicate with what he believed were children, but in fact, were undercover police officers.

Last Wednesday, Bennett returned to the same court for sentencing.

The court chose a punishment that did not involve imprisonment; instead, Sheriff John Cook sentenced Bennett to a community payback order.

This decision was made as an alternative to custodial detention, reflecting considerations of his age and circumstances.

In addition to the community service, Bennett was placed on the sex offenders' register for three years and subjected to a supervision requirement for the same period.

He was also mandated to complete 220 hours of unpaid work within the community.

Furthermore, the court imposed a conduct regulation on Bennett, meaning that authorities will continuously monitor his use of mobile phones and internet access to prevent any further misconduct.

During the proceedings, it was disclosed that Bennett had separated from his partner following his arrest and had moved to a residence in Leeswood, Wales.

The sheriff confirmed that the court orders and supervision conditions would be transferred to Welsh authorities for enforcement.

This case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of covert policing efforts in protecting minors from predators.

Bennett admitted to sending written sexual communications and multiple explicit images to what he believed were young girls, all of whom were undercover police officers.

The incidents spanned from December 19, 2020, to September 6 the following year, revealing a disturbing pattern of behavior that authorities acted swiftly to address.
