September 2003 Pub landlord jailed for sex attacks on girl A pub landlord was jailed for three-and-a-half-years after carrying out sex attacks on a teenage girl. Stephen Rees, 45, also admitted stealing from a regular at his bar. Cardiff Crown Court heard Rees paid the teenager for a head massage but then indecently assaulted her. Prosecutor Jonathan Austin said Rees accused his victim’s mother of “being sick” when she challenged him. He said, “The girl’s mother was concerned about her daughter. She confronted Rees. “He denied it – accusing the girl’s mother of being sick. “The girl described one occasion when Rees asked her to massage his head and offered her money to do it. “But once she started he fondled her breasts.” Rees also stole from a regular at his Oyster catcher pub in Bridgend, South Wales. Mr Austin said, “Customer David Hughes was friendly with Rees and asked him to look after the money in the pub safe. “But once the sexual accusations against Rees had come out he realised his money may be in danger. He asked to check the safe – the envelope with his money was missing.” Rees, now of Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, admitted eight indecent assaults and theft of the cash. Judge John Griffith Williams QC ordered Rees to registeras a sex offender for life and banned him from working with children.
