MAN JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A dangerous and predatory individual has been formally sentenced following his guilty plea to a series of serious child sex offences at Guildford Crown Court on Monday, 14 August.The offender, Stephen Powell, aged 42 and born on April 15, 1981, who does not have a fixed address, received a sentence of three years in prison for his crimes.
In addition to the custodial term, Powell was also subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which imposes specific restrictions intended to protect the public from known offenders.
The police investigation into Powell’s activities began in April 2020 after reports emerged concerning his online conduct.
Law enforcement officials quickly responded and arrested Powell on the same day the allegations were reported.
Subsequent searches of his electronic devices uncovered disturbing evidence: Powell had been transmitting sexualised messages via Facebook Messenger targeted at a teenage girl residing in Surrey.
During these exchanges, Powell not only engaged in inappropriate communications but also encouraged the minor to send explicit images of herself.
Powell’s guilty plea covered a total of seven counts related to child sexual offences.
These charges included two counts of making indecent photographs of a child, two counts of distributing such photographs, and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
The charges underline a pattern of predatory behaviour facilitated through modern digital communication platforms.
In addition to his most recent convictions, Powell was sentenced to an additional two months imprisonment following charges of burglary and fraud, which further exemplifies his engagement in criminal activities beyond the child sex offences.
