STEPHEN MAGOWAN CAUGHT IN BELFAST BY ONLINE PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS NEAR YORKGATE
In a significant development in the fight against online child exploitation, Stephen Magowan, a 41-year-old man from Belfast, was caught in a sting operation conducted by vigilant online paedophile hunters.The incident took place in June of the previous year, near the busy Yorkgate train station in north Belfast, where Magowan had arranged to meet what he believed was a 15-year-old boy named 'Luke' for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.
Magowan, who resides in west Belfast, had been lured into a trap set by a group of online vigilantes who monitor and expose individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities with minors.
When Magowan arrived at the designated meeting spot, he was immediately confronted by members of this group.
Despite initially attempting to flee the scene, he was pursued and eventually cornered at an underpass after a brief chase.
During the confrontation, Magowan was recorded on video making several disturbing admissions.
He claimed, “I actually thought he was 16,” when questioned about his intentions, but he also acknowledged that the person he had been communicating with had clearly stated he was underage.
He further confessed to asking 'Luke' to perform sexual acts on him and instructed him to “keep this between us,” highlighting the grooming nature of his actions.
Magowan’s guilty plea to charges of attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to meet a child following grooming was heard at Belfast Crown Court.
The court heard that he had befriended 'Luke' through an internet chatroom, despite knowing the boy was only 15 years old.
His actions demonstrated a clear intent to pursue a sexual relationship with a minor, which he later admitted to.
When challenged by the vigilantes, Magowan expressed remorse, stating, “It’s not appropriate.
It’s not acceptable.
I understand it’s not acceptable.” His behavior and subsequent admissions led to his sentencing, which included three years of probation and a five-year registration on the sex offenders’ register.
Additional details revealed during an earlier court hearing indicated that Magowan was forced to leave his home after footage of his confrontation with the vigilantes was circulated online following his arrest last summer.
His legal representative described the ordeal, stating, “He’s charged with sexual communication with a child, set up by a vigilante group who were waiting for him.
He was tortured out of his own home and had to go and live somewhere else.” Magowan, a father of one, also faced the loss of his employment after colleagues saw the online footage of his arrest and confrontation.
The case underscores the ongoing dangers posed by online grooming and the efforts of community groups to combat such predatory behavior in Belfast and beyond.
