In a disturbing case that has shocked the Sunderland community, Stephen Jones, a 54-year-old man with no fixed address, was caught attempting to meet a girl he believed was only 14 years old for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. The incident unfolded after Jones had been grooming what he thought was a young girl online, believing her to be a schoolgirl from Sunderland.
Jones had engaged in a series of inappropriate conversations with the decoy profile created by the paedophile hunting group Dark Justice. During these exchanges, he asked the girl to strip, sent a graphic image of his genitals, and discussed the possibility of having sex. The predator also arranged to meet her at University station in Sunderland, suggesting that she could stay overnight at his residence, which he claimed was available for her.
Prosecutor John Hobley detailed the interactions in court, revealing that Jones was aware of the girl’s age but dismissed her age of 14 with a casual remark, saying,
