FIFE RAPIST STEPHEN GRAHAM'S HORRIFIC CRIME SPREE IN GLENROTHES AND BEYOND
In October 2018, a harrowing case of sexual violence and abuse unfolded in Fife, involving the convicted rapist Stephen Graham. The victim, a woman named Carin who chose to waive her anonymity, courageously shared her traumatic experience ahead of Graham’s upcoming sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Carin, a former Army medic with seven years of frontline service in Afghanistan, recounted her initial encounter with Graham, which dated back to their high school days.
After returning from military duty, she unexpectedly crossed paths with him again.
Initially, Graham appeared charming and unassuming, leading her to believe she had found someone special.
However, beneath this facade, he concealed a darker, violent nature that would soon surface.
She described their early relationship as seemingly perfect, with the first six weeks filled with laughter and harmony.
“In my head, it was the best relationship I’d ever been in,” she said.
“I thought I had found the one.
We laughed all the time and we didn’t argue even once.” But this idyllic period was short-lived.
Once Carin moved into her own flat, Graham’s true colors emerged.
His jealousy became intense, and he forbade her from having male friends or even engaging with them on social media.
To placate his suspicions, Carin kept her phone constantly visible, trying to reassure him.
Looking back, she recognizes how expertly Graham manipulated her, gradually making her feel dependent on him and convinced she needed his presence.
Over time, Graham’s controlling behavior escalated.
Carin admits that she felt increasingly isolated and manipulated, to the point where she found herself defending him to her family and friends.
Eventually, she summoned the courage to end the relationship, realizing she could no longer tolerate his abusive conduct.
Her decision to walk away marked a turning point, but the trauma was far from over.
She reflected, “When this all happened, I think I punished myself because I couldn’t help but think what had I done wrong that was making him act this way.
Now I know more about narcissism and the way they work, I’ve learnt that it wasn’t my fault.” Graham’s violence first manifested publicly in September of the previous year when he physically assaulted Carin, grabbing her by the throat and throwing her across the living room as she prepared for college.
Despite her efforts to escape and seek help, Graham’s grip on her remained strong.
She managed to call the police, leading to his arrest and remand in custody.
However, even behind bars, Graham’s influence persisted.
Carin visited him in prison, where he tearfully begged for her forgiveness, promising he would never hurt her again and expressing remorse for his actions.
Despite his pleas, the abuse did not cease.
While incarcerated, Graham continued to harass Carin through abusive voicemails and phone calls.
After his release in December, the couple briefly reunited, but Graham’s violent tendencies resurfaced within days, leading to their separation once more.
The nightmare culminated in February when Carin, after a night out with friends, was attacked outside her flat in Markinch.
She awoke dazed and confused on Graham’s living room couch, realizing she was trapped in a nine-hour ordeal of terror.
During this time, Graham held her hostage, threatened her with a knife, and repeatedly assaulted her before raping her.
Carin described her fear during the attack: “I knew if he caught me trying to escape, he’d kill me.
I could hear my heart beating.
I don’t even remember shutting the door, I think I was in shock.” Her escape was ultimately successful, and she managed to reach her grandmother’s house, where emergency services and police were called.
Graham was apprehended and brought to trial at Livingston High Court, where he was found guilty of multiple charges, including assault and rape.
The court also convicted him of two counts of threatening and abusive behavior towards police officers at his flat and Levenmouth police station in September of the previous year.
As a result, Graham’s name has been added to the sex offenders register, and details of his conviction have been forwarded to Scottish ministers under the protection of vulnerable groups legislation, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
Graham, aged 29, faces a sentencing hearing scheduled for Tuesday, marking the culmination of a case that has shocked the community in Fife and beyond.
His actions have left a lasting scar on Carin’s life, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence and sexual assault in the region.
