Cwmbran Domestic Homicide
In a tragic and disturbing case that has shocked the community of Cwmbran, Stephen Gallagher has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of the brutal murder of his 76-year-old father, Thomas Gallagher. The incident took place on September 10, 2019, within the confines of their family home on Kidwelly Road, a quiet residential area in Cwmbran. The events leading up to the murder reportedly stemmed from a seemingly trivial argument over their broadband internet connection, which escalated into a violent assault that would forever alter the lives of those involved.

According to court records, Gallagher did not deny his involvement. He admitted to calling emergency services after the attack and confessed to the killing, ultimately pleading guilty during the court proceedings. The court was told that Gallagher launched a savage attack on his father, repeatedly stabbing him in what was described as an 'intense' assault. The attack took place within their shared home, and the evidence presented indicated that the assault was carried out with extreme violence and without remorse.

During the trial, the prosecution emphasized that Thomas Gallagher was unable to defend himself against the attack. No defensive injuries were found on the elderly victim, which further underscored the brutality of the assault and the intent behind it. The court heard that Gallagher's actions were characterized by savagery and a complete lack of mercy. Judge Paul Thomas QC remarked that Gallagher's only apparent intention when grabbing the knife was to inflict harm, highlighting the severity of the crime.

The Gallagher family expressed profound grief and sorrow following the verdict. They described Thomas Gallagher as a man with a big heart whose loss has created an unfillable void in their lives. “Losing Thomas has been a devastating tragedy. He was the beat of a big-hearted family and he has left a hole in our lives that will never be repaired,” they stated.

As for the sentencing, Gallagher was ordered to serve a minimum term of 13 years and four months before being eligible for parole. The investigation into the case was led by Detective Superintendent Leanne Brustad, who conveyed her hope that the sentencing would provide some measure of closure for the grieving family and bring a sense of justice to the community of Cwmbran.
