2011: OLDBURY PERVERT JAILED AFTER ATTACK ON TERRIFIED TEENAGE GIRL
A man aged 40 from Oldbury received a seven-year prison sentence after trying to assault a teenage girl in a park. The 17-year-old victim was walking home in the early hours after visiting a friend when Stephen Cowley approached her from behind on his bright orange and red bicycle, prosecutor Mr.
Mark Rees explained.
Cowley dismounted his bike, made suggestive comments, and after laughing, pushed her toward the woods in Warley Park.
He punched her in the face as she screamed, then placed his hand over her mouth, threatening to kill her if she made additional noise.
Cowley then dragged her into an alleyway near Lightwoods Park, pressing her face against a tree as he attempted to remove her clothing.
The girl was able to call her mother during the assault, but Cowley seized her phone and threw it away.
While pinning her against a tree, intending to carry out the assault, he told her, 'Tonight's your lucky night,' before telling her to leave.
She ran to a friend's house and informed her parents, prompting police to act.
The girl was able to describe her attacker, leading to Cowley's identification, and he confessed to attempted rape.
Police arrested him at his home, where they recovered the bike and gloves that matched her description.
Judge Martin Walsh sentenced him to seven years and mandated lifelong registration as a sex offender.
