Dursley Child Sexual Abuser
In a recent development in the ongoing fight against child exploitation, Stephen Cosworth, a man with a troubling criminal background, appeared before Gloucester Crown Court in March 2013. Originally from Dursley, Cosworth, who has since relocated to Workington in Cumbria, faced serious allegations after police uncovered disturbing material on his electronic devices.

Cosworth, a 40-year-old man heavily marked with tattoos, arrived at court carrying two large suitcases, seemingly expecting to be sentenced to prison. His appearance was striking; on the right side of his head, he had the words "God and the Devil fear me" inked, and on the back of his head, the phrase "United we stand, divided we fall" was visible. Despite his intimidating exterior, he was described as a loner who has not maintained contact with any of his 15 children, whom he reportedly fathered with multiple women.

During the court proceedings, Judge Jamie Tabor QC instructed Cosworth to leave his belongings aside, joking that if he needed assistance, court staff would call for porters. The defendant was dressed in casual attire, lugging a heavy holdall, while a security guard carried an even larger suitcase into the courtroom.

The case against Cosworth was initiated when police stopped him in July of the previous year. During the stop, they seized his mobile phone as part of an unrelated investigation. A review of the device revealed the presence of inappropriate images, which prompted further investigation and a search of his residence. The police discovered a collection of indecent images, some of which had been printed, laminated, and stored in a folder. Additionally, they found a notebook containing a list of URLs associated with pornography sites.

The authorities also uncovered a significant criminal record for Cosworth, though it did not include previous sex offenses. Prosecutor Julian Kesner highlighted that the police’s discovery of the images and related material was a serious concern. Cosworth pleaded guilty to 13 charges of possessing indecent images of children.

In court, Judge Tabor remarked on Cosworth’s personal circumstances, noting his status as a father of 15 children, none of whom he appears to see. The judge commented on Cosworth’s self-description as a loner, despite his large family, suggesting that the state likely provides support for his children. The judge’s tone reflected the gravity of the case, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.

Cosworth’s defense attorney, Joe Maloney, described his client’s situation as “quite remarkable,” asserting that he was not involved in any paedophile ring and emphasizing that Cosworth is a “very bright man” and “very articulate.” Despite these character references, the court’s focus remained on the serious nature of the charges and the need for appropriate sentencing and monitoring.
