STEPHEN BOYD FROM HARTLEPOOL SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND MANIPULATION
In a serious case that has shocked the Hartlepool community, Stephen Boyd, a 46-year-old man from Hartlepool, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of multiple offenses related to child exploitation and possession of indecent images.The case unfolded when Boyd, who was already on the Sex Offender’s Register for distributing and creating indecent photographs of children, engaged in a deceptive online relationship with a single mother from Stockton, Catherine Hendricks, also aged 46.
Boyd initially contacted Hendricks through an internet dating website, claiming to seek a genuine and lasting relationship.
Unbeknownst to her, Boyd concealed his criminal background, which included previous convictions for child pornography.
His manipulative tactics and devious nature became evident as he gradually gained her trust, ultimately persuading her to send him an indecent photograph of a child.
Prosecutor Shaun Dodds told Teesside Crown Court that Hendricks, upon discovering Boyd’s sexual interest in young girls, decided to end the relationship and report him to the authorities, risking her own safety in the process.
Following her report, Boyd was arrested by police, who found a collection of child pornography on his devices.
Hendricks was also charged in connection with the single photograph she had sent, which was part of the evidence against her.
During the court proceedings, Judge Deborah Sherwin described Boyd as a “devious and manipulative” sexual offender who would go to great lengths to satisfy his twisted desires.
Boyd’s criminal history and ongoing attempts to evade detection were highlighted, as he had used various aliases to avoid the restrictions imposed by his sex offender status.
Hendricks’ involvement in the case had severe consequences for her family.
Her children were taken from her custody and are now living with their father.
She was spared immediate imprisonment but was given a 15-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, along with supervision orders.
The judge acknowledged her troubled state and her efforts to protect her children, stating, “You are clearly a troubled individual and you need help.” During the trial, it was revealed that Hendricks had handed police two mobile phones containing text messages from Boyd, which played a crucial role in bringing him to justice.
She had initially ended her relationship with Boyd after accusing him of playing mind games, but her persistence in seeking police assistance ultimately led to his arrest.
Despite being told that certain information could not be disclosed to her, she continued to pursue the matter, eventually handing over her phones with incriminating messages.
Boyd’s defense lawyer, Mr.
Cleasby, argued that his client deserved credit for his guilty pleas and emphasized that Boyd had not engaged in any direct indecent touching of children.
It was noted that Boyd had previously undergone a sex offender treatment program after his 2007 conviction, although he admitted to not participating fully.
The court heard that Boyd now recognized his difficulties and expressed a willingness to accept help.
In addition to his prison sentence, Boyd was handed an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits him from having contact with girls under 16 and restricts his unsupervised internet use.
His sentence totals three years and three months, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and his failure to comply with previous legal requirements.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in monitoring and managing convicted sex offenders, especially those with a history of manipulative behavior and possession of extreme pornography.
