STEPHEN ANDERSON INVOLVED IN SCANDAL AT WATFORD SCHOOL FOR SCOTS SERVICEMEN

In July 1996, a significant scandal erupted surrounding a historic educational institution in Watford, known as the Royal Caledonian School, which was established to serve the children of Scottish servicemen. The school, which boasts a history spanning over 190 years and holds the Queen as its patron, faced a devastating blow to its reputation following a series of serious sex scandals involving staff members.

At the time, only a single pupil remained enrolled at the school, as its student numbers had sharply declined due to the reduction in armed forces personnel following the end of the Cold War and the subsequent peace dividend. The school’s decline was further exacerbated when concerned local authorities took control of its operations last year, amid mounting concerns over the safety and integrity of its staff.

The scandal first came to light when two teachers at the school were convicted and sentenced for child abuse. Among them was Allen Meredith, who received a ten-year prison sentence in June 1995 for heinous assaults on boys. The other involved staff member was Stephen Anderson, also from Watford, who was sentenced to three and a half years after being found guilty of indecently assaulting a pupil. These convictions severely tarnished the school’s reputation, which had already been under scrutiny.

Adding to the turmoil, the trial of the school’s headteacher, David Watts, aged 64, and his deputy, Charles Pope, aged 65, collapsed last month. Both officials denied allegations of cruelty towards children, but the proceedings highlighted the ongoing issues within the institution. During the court hearings, it was revealed that another staff member, Teresa Ford, aged 36, had engaged in a relationship with a female pupil at the school. The girl, who is now 19, later moved to Edinburgh, where Ford followed her. Although Ford was never formally charged, her actions prompted serious concern.

Recently, Ford was suspended from her role as a social worker with the children’s charity Barnardo’s after authorities discovered her relationship with the former pupil. The organization has launched an investigation into her conduct, emphasizing the seriousness with which they are treating the matter. A spokesperson for Barnardo’s stated, “We are taking this matter very seriously.”

Despite the scandals, the Royal Caledonian School continues to receive funding from the Royal Caledonian Schools Trust, which still supports the education of children of Scottish soldiers. However, the number of children requiring the school’s services has diminished significantly, largely due to the reduction in military personnel stationed in the UK. The school’s premises have been leased out, but its mission remains supported by the trust, which aims to preserve its legacy and continue providing education for the children of Scots servicemen.
