NORTH LANARKSHIRE WOMAN GIVEN 20-YEAR ANIMAL BAN AFTER DOG'S EMACIATION
A woman from North Lanarkshire has been banned from keeping animals for 20 years for allowing her dog to become so emaciated that it ate its own faeces.Stacey Moran, aged 27, from Coatbridge, admitted a charge of neglecting her one-year-old crossbreed dog Sasha and failing to get it veterinary attention.
Airdrie Sheriff Court heard how the animal was discovered in a dirty room filled with rubbish and faeces.
Sasha has now fully recovered and was re-homed through the Scottish SPCA.
Inspector Sam MacDonald from the Scottish SPCA explained that they were alerted by the local housing department due to concerns about potential abandonment.
The officers found the dog in a rubbish-strewn room with no access to food or water, and she was extremely underweight, with her spine and ribs easily felt through her long coat.
The vet determined Sasha weighed only 4.5kg, whereas a dog of her size should weigh around 7kg.
The vet also found evidence that Sasha had been eating her own faeces, indicating how desperately hungry she was.
Moran claimed she had been on holiday for three days, leaving a family member responsible for feeding Sasha, but it was apparent her condition had worsened over a longer period.
Inspector MacDonald described this as a case of gross neglect.
Sasha has since made a full recovery, gaining 2.35kg through proper feeding, and has been placed with a responsible new owner.
