SOPHIE BIRD AND SAMANTHA BROWNING FROM WALSALL COMMIT HORRIFIC CAT KILLING IN WALSALL AND STOURBRIDGE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities, Sophie Bird, born on April 23, 1993, of Norton Road, Stourbridge, and Samantha Browning, born on February 20, 1990, of Farmbridge Close, Walsall, have been found guilty of heinous animal cruelty involving the drowning of four cats. The incident took place in Walsall and Stourbridge, revealing a chilling act of systematic cruelty that has left residents appalled.According to court proceedings, the cruelty unfolded after a party, when Browning traveled from her residence in Walsall to Bird’s former home in Tipton. It was there that Browning suggested the idea of killing the cats, a suggestion that Bird allegedly agreed to. The RSPCA prosecutor, Nick Sutton, detailed the horrifying sequence of events, stating that Bird “filled the bath with water while Browning drowned the cats one after the other.”
He further explained that the process was particularly brutal: “After the third cat, the fourth was more difficult for Browning, who expressed reluctance, but Bird said ‘well, you’ve done the first three you might as well do this one’. Bird denies this account, but the evidence points to a systematic and callous act of killing.”
Sutton emphasized the cruelty involved, describing the death of the cats as “terrible,” and underscoring that “there’s no excuse for this.” The cats, described as young and intelligent creatures, were fully aware of what was happening to them. The court heard that the other cats, who were not recovered, had their bodies stuffed into a plastic bag and discarded over a fence, while the bodies of two of the cats were later recovered. The remaining two have yet to be found.
Samantha Browning, who now resides in Walsall with her wife and her wife’s daughter, was warned that this crime would stay with her for many years. Despite her efforts to move on, her involvement in this act of animal cruelty has left a lasting stain. It has been discovered that both Browning and her wife, who are now married to each other, have responsibility for young children and are around dogs, which could potentially breach court restrictions on animal ownership.
Meanwhile, Sophie Bird, now known as Sophie Gormley-Bird, is employed and resides at the Greyhound pub in Stourbridge. It appears she has recently separated from her wife, with whom she shares a daughter, and she retains custody of the child. Bird’s mother, who also works at the pub, owns a dog. Bird’s actions and current lifestyle continue to draw public concern.
In terms of sentencing, both women received an 18-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 24 months. They were also ordered to undertake unpaid work and pay court costs. Additionally, they are banned from owning animals for ten years, a restriction that expired in August 2021. The case has garnered significant media attention, with outlets such as BirminghamLive and the Daily Mail covering the story, highlighting the severity of the crime and its impact on the community.
