A police officer from Devon & Cornwall has been handed a significant sentence after being convicted of a serious sexual assault. PC Simon Mitchell, aged 43 and residing in Bideford, was sentenced to three years in prison by Bristol Crown Court on Thursday, 31 October. In addition to his imprisonment, Mitchell was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, marking a severe consequence for his actions.Mitchell, who had maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings, was found guilty by a jury after a nine-day trial held in September. The court was informed that the incident occurred in June 2022, during a period when Mitchell was off-duty. The event took place at the police accommodation block in Devon & Cornwall, where Mitchell was socialising with colleagues. This detail underscores the breach of conduct, as the incident was linked to a setting where police officers are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
The case was brought to light when the incident was reported to authorities in September 2022. An investigation was swiftly launched, leading to Mitchell’s arrest. Following his arrest, he was immediately suspended from his duties as a police officer, reflecting the seriousness with which the force treated the allegations. Despite Mitchell’s claims that the circumstances surrounding the incident differed from those presented in court, the jury reached a majority verdict on 12 September 2024, confirming his guilt.
Today’s sentencing underscores the gravity of the crime and the commitment of the police force to uphold justice. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman issued a statement emphasizing the thoroughness of the investigation and the force’s dedication to combating predatory behavior. He expressed support for the victim, who was present in court to give evidence, and acknowledged her bravery in doing so. Longman also conveyed hope that the sentence would provide some measure of closure for her after her ordeal.
Furthermore, Mitchell’s conviction will trigger internal misconduct proceedings within the police force. The outcome of these proceedings will be made public in due course, as part of the force’s ongoing efforts to maintain accountability and uphold public trust.
