SIMON MILES GROOMING SCANDAL IN SWINDON: HGV DRIVER ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEX OFFENSES AGAINST 14-YEAR-OLD
In a recent case heard at Swindon Crown Court, Simon Miles, a 39-year-old heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver from Carstairs Avenue, Park South, was involved in a disturbing incident involving a vulnerable 14-year-old girl he had known for many years.The court was informed that Miles had engaged in inappropriate and sexualized behavior towards the young girl, whom he had been friends with and had known since she was a baby.
The incident took place on Thursday, March 26 of the previous year, when Miles took the girl out to a Costa Coffee shop in Swindon.
During this outing, he began to behave in a manner that was clearly inappropriate and concerning.
Prosecutor Colin Meeke detailed that Miles asked the girl on a scale of one to ten how much she loved him and inquired if she could keep a secret.
The situation escalated when he invited her to return to his caravan, where he asked her to kiss him on the lips.
Although she initially kissed him on the cheek, she turned her head away when he attempted to kiss her on the lips.
Further disturbing actions occurred when Miles unbuckled her seatbelt and licked her face.
The incident was interrupted when they stopped to pick up her brother, bringing the encounter to an end.
Despite the nature of the offenses not being the most severe in terms of sexual violence, the emotional and psychological impact on the girl was profound.
The court heard that she now suffers from recurring nightmares involving sexual assault and has experienced increased suicidal thoughts since the incident.
She also exhibits heightened anxiety around men and fears of being raped, with her nightmares occurring most nights, indicating the deep trauma inflicted upon her.
Initially, Miles denied any sexual activity with the girl, but he later changed his plea to guilty on the day of the trial.
His defense lawyer, James Burke, emphasized that Miles, who has children of his own, requires help to understand and address the reasons behind his offending behavior.
Burke described the initial relationship as seemingly innocent and playful but acknowledged that Miles had crossed a line, leading to inappropriate conduct.
The pre-sentence report highlighted that Miles’s insight into the inappropriateness of his actions was limited and that he needed to confront the underlying reasons for his behavior.
Judge Tim Mousley QC addressed the court, stating that the defendant’s actions, which began as a seemingly harmless relationship, were in fact a form of grooming aimed at exploiting the girl’s vulnerability.
The judge condemned Miles for betraying the trust placed in him and causing significant harm to the young victim.
He criticized Miles for showing no remorse and failing to demonstrate any understanding of the gravity of his actions, which he described as “appalling.” In sentencing, Judge Mousley imposed a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, coupled with a requirement to participate in a Thames Valley Sex Offender Programme.
Miles was also ordered to register as a sex offender.
The judge noted that Miles’s risk of reoffending could be managed within the community, but emphasized the importance of ongoing supervision and intervention to prevent further harm.
The case underscores the serious consequences of grooming and sexual misconduct, especially involving vulnerable minors in Swindon.
