Helensburgh Sexual Abuser
In April 2022, the quiet town of Helensburgh was shaken by disturbing revelations involving Simon Cunningham, a 46-year-old resident, who was found to have committed serious and prolonged acts of abuse against two children over a span of several years.
According to court records, Cunningham engaged in a pattern of disturbing behavior that included repeatedly forcing two young victims to participate in his bizarre and inappropriate fantasies. He convinced them to play along with his delusional belief that he was a three-year-old girl, which he referred to as 'Molly.' This involved him dressing up in adult nappies, wearing a baby-girl style dress, wig, and accessories such as a bottle and dummy, all in front of the children.
The court heard that Cunningham's actions extended over nearly a decade, with one of the abuse cases occurring from April 2011 to March 2021, and the other spanning from March 2014 to March 2021. During this period, he would dress as 'Molly,' provide the children with a baby bottle and dummy, and even send them text messages describing his experiences of dressing up. He also made disturbing references to standing in front of the children in a soiled nappy and asked them to buy him new ones.
One of the most troubling aspects of Cunningham’s conduct involved making one of the children wear nappies while they slept. He expressed disappointment when the child did not soil the nappy, accusing the child of wasting his money. This particular offense was committed on multiple occasions, and Cunningham’s behavior included encouraging the child to change into a nappy and watch cartoons with him, all while pretending to be a toddler.
In addition to these acts, Cunningham admitted to sexually assaulting one of the children during a single incident that took place between March 2014 and March 2016. The details of this assault were presented in court, and Cunningham pleaded guilty to three charges in total. He was also found to have behaved in a threatening or abusive manner towards the children at a property in Helensburgh.
Following his guilty pleas, Cunningham was placed on the sex offenders register. He was listed as residing on West Princes Street at the time of the court proceedings. The case was heard at Dumbarton Sheriff Court, where the judge acknowledged the severity of Cunningham’s actions and the potential psychological trauma inflicted on the victims.
Sentencing was deferred twice, first until March 22 and later until May, to allow social workers to prepare a comprehensive background report. During the hearing, Sheriff Maxwell Hendry expressed concern about the possible long-term psychological impact on the children and questioned whether Cunningham recognized the gravity of his actions. His solicitor, Kenny McGowan, stated that Cunningham accepted responsibility and acknowledged that his conduct was inappropriate and wrong. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the case and decided to delay the final sentencing to gather further information before making a decision.
