SIMON CLEMENT SENTENCED IN PORTSMOUTH FOR VOYEURISM OFFENSES
In May 2021, a man from Portsmouth was convicted after secretly installing cameras in a bedroom and bathroom to record a man and woman during private moments. A court heard that Simon Clement, 28, had placed a camera inside a Bluetooth speaker on top of a wardrobe, which was discovered by the victims. Prosecutor Martyn Booth explained that another camera was found partially hidden in the bathroom, angled towards the toilet. The victims, a man and woman, were understandably shocked when they found the devices. They alerted the police, who analyzed recordings saved on an SD card and Clement’s laptop. The footage included images of the victims urinating, defecating, and sleeping naked, as well as footage of Clement himself adjusting the camera.
Initially, Clement claimed he did not know how the speaker ended up on top of the wardrobe and denied that the recordings were made for sexual gratification. However, he later admitted to two counts of voyeurism linked to the recordings.
Mr. Booth stated, ‘Both (the man and woman) were devastated by what they had found,’ adding, ‘The impact and effect on them has been enormous. They have both encountered a huge lack of trust with others. They both experienced a feeling of insecurity within their own homes.’
Clement had originally purchased the cameras on medical advice to record his nocturnal seizures but had used them unlawfully in the Portsmouth area during 2018-2019.
Recorder Elisabeth Bussey-Jones remarked, ‘The fact is you were clearly deliberately using them to capture (the pair).’
Clement, residing on Brookmead Way in Langstone, Havant, was sentenced to a 10-year restraining order to prevent contact with his victims, providing reassurance for their safety. He was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and ordered to register as a sex offender for five years.
Furthermore, Recorder Bussey-Jones sentenced him to a three-year community order, which includes 150 hours of unpaid work and participation in a sex offenders’ treatment program under probation supervision. Clement was also ordered to pay £800 in prosecution costs.
