SIDNEY MORRIS FROM SOMERSET JAILED FOR CHILD EXPLOITATION AND ONLINE ABUSE IN WESTON-SUPER-MARE AND BRISTOL
A 55-year-old man named Sidney Morris, residing on Brompton Road in Weston-super-Mare, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 16 years after admitting to a series of heinous crimes involving the exploitation of children over the internet. The sentencing took place at Bristol Crown Court on Monday, 29 April, following Morris's guilty plea to a total of 15 serious charges.
Among the charges were one count of attempting to incite a boy under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, and another count of attempting to incite a girl aged between 13 and 15 to participate in similar sexual acts.
Morris also faced seven counts related to attempting to arrange or facilitate child sex offenses, highlighting his active efforts to connect with and exploit minors.
Further charges included three counts of making indecent images of children, as well as three additional attempts to engage in sexual communication with a child.
These allegations underscore the disturbing nature of Morris's online activities and his intent to exploit vulnerable minors.
The investigation into Morris's activities was spearheaded by the Avon and Somerset Police’s Internet Child Abuse Team (ICAT), working in collaboration with the North East and West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCU).
In June 2022, officers from the West Midlands ROCU uncovered evidence that Morris had been messaging someone he believed to be a young child from the UK, engaging in inappropriate and sexual conversations.
This discovery prompted further investigation into his online behavior.
In July of the same year, Morris was arrested at his home in Weston-super-Mare.
Authorities seized his electronic devices for forensic analysis.
The examination revealed a disturbing collection of 574 indecent images of children, including 84 images classified as Category A, which are considered the most serious, along with 170 Category B and 320 Category C images.
All these images appeared to depict children from an Asian country as young as four years old being sexually exploited.
During the course of the investigation, law enforcement officials uncovered that Morris had paid over $14,000 to individuals abroad to facilitate the exploitation of these children.
It is believed that Morris used various payment channels, making the actual amount spent potentially much higher, reflecting the extent of his involvement and the financial resources he allocated to this criminal activity.
As the investigation progressed, authorities from the North East ROCU discovered that Morris was actively attempting to facilitate the abuse and exploitation of children through online platforms.
His efforts to coordinate and promote such heinous acts led to his arrest on 1 November 2023.
Subsequently, he was formally charged with the 15 counts of child exploitation and related offenses.
DC Benn Murphy, the investigating officer, emphasized the severity of Morris’s actions, stating, “Morris poses a very real and significant risk to children.
He has tried to hide his actions behind the anonymity of the internet and by targeting vulnerable people both in the UK and abroad.
This should serve as a warning to those who look to exploit or abuse children; there are no safe places to hide.
The true scale of harm he has caused is unlikely to ever truly be known, but we continue to make every effort to identify and safeguard individuals affected by this investigation.”
