After a comprehensive investigation by Thames Valley Police, a man has been sentenced to prison for crimes of rape and sexual assault that spanned over twenty years.
Shaun Smith, age 47, residing on Bernwood Road in Barton, Oxfordshire, received an 18-year prison sentence at Oxford Crown Court on April 29.
In addition to his jail term, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was issued restraining orders protecting each of his victims.
Smith's arrests occurred twice, once in March 2017 and again in December 2022.
Following an extensive police inquiry, he was formally charged on October 18, 2024.
Initially, Smith had pleaded not guilty to charges including one count of rape, one of sexual assault, and two counts of assault by penetration.
However, after a two-week trial at Oxford Crown Court, the jury found him guilty of all charges on April 1.
The court was told that Smith had assaulted a teenage girl in Oxford in 2000, a woman in her twenties in Hastings in 2012, and two women in their thirties in Oxford in 2017 and 2022.
In each incident, the victims were asleep and unable to give consent at the time of the assaults.
