SHAUN MALBY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN STROOD: WEATHER WEBSITE OWNER EXPOSES HIMSELF TO TEENAGE GIRLS
In a disturbing series of incidents in Strood, Shaun Maltby, a 29-year-old amateur weatherman and owner of the Kent Weather website, has been involved in multiple indecent acts that have shocked the local community and prompted serious legal action. On the morning of November 8 last year, Maltby committed a heinous act as two teenage girls, aged 14 and 15, were walking along Carnation Road, heading to school. Witnesses reported that Maltby appeared at his front door completely naked from the waist down. As the girls passed by, Maltby was looking directly at them, causing alarm and distress. One of the girls, upon looking back, saw Maltby standing by his front room window, holding back a net curtain with one hand while performing a sex act on himself with the other.
The girls immediately reported the incident to a teacher, who then contacted the police. Maltby was quickly arrested, but he initially denied the allegations, claiming that he was merely checking the weather and that his house was too cold for him to walk around naked. Despite his denials, both girls identified Maltby during an identification procedure, confirming his involvement.
In court proceedings, Maltby pleaded guilty to the charge of exposure. The case was brought before Medway magistrates, and he was subsequently committed to Maidstone Crown Court for sentencing. Prosecutor Francesca Levett described the incident as particularly disturbing, emphasizing that Maltby’s actions were not only public but also performed in a manner that could have been frightening for the young victims.
It was also revealed that Maltby had a history of similar offences. In 2008, he was convicted of exposing himself to a cashier at a Somerfield store. Just three months later, he committed another offence by exposing himself to a 22-year-old customer service clerk at a NatWest branch. On that occasion, Maltby admitted guilt, and he was given a 24-month community order for both offences.
Despite these prior convictions, Maltby’s current case drew attention to his ongoing issues. During the hearing, his defense argued that Maltby’s attitude and understanding of his behaviour had changed significantly, and he was actively seeking help through cognitive behavioural therapy. The court was told that Maltby had also targeted the girls because of their gender, not their age, which added to the severity of the case.
Judge David Griffith-Jones QC, in passing sentence, acknowledged the seriousness of Maltby’s actions. He imposed a 15-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, citing the fact that Maltby had performed a sex act in front of the girls as an aggravating factor. The judge emphasized that the incident must have been a traumatic experience for the victims, likely to be remembered for a long time. He also criticized Maltby for failing to take advantage of the help offered by the probation service after his previous convictions.
As part of his sentence, Maltby will be under supervision for two years, required to attend a sex offender treatment program, and will be on the sex offenders’ register for seven years. Additionally, he is barred from working with children. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his offences and the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention.
The community in Strood remains concerned about Maltby’s actions, which have cast a shadow over his reputation as a weather enthusiast. His website, which provides weather forecasts across Kent and attracts approximately 100,000 visitors each month, has become associated with his criminal behaviour. The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding young people and the serious consequences of such offences.
