Worcester Rapist
A man from Worcester has been convicted of a serious sexual assault that took place at Tallow Hill, where he was residing at the time. Shaun Day, aged 24 and also known by the nickname “Sid” from the Ice Age, now faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence following his conviction for raping a vulnerable young woman. The incident occurred after a brief acquaintance of just one week between Day and the woman, which culminated in a disturbing assault on July 13.

According to the prosecutor, Bernard Linnemann, during the trial at Worcester Crown Court, Day initially approached the woman and made a comment about her “lovely eyes.” The woman, who was at the time dressed in her underwear and a long cardigan, had initially declined Day’s request for a massage. After he left, he returned to find her in her current attire, and she indicated that she did not object to his asking for a kiss and a cuddle. The woman believed she had fallen in love with Day because she was flattered by his attention, a sentiment that Day himself explained by saying, “She was sufficiently flattered to take the view that she fell in love with him. It is part of her vulnerability that that’s how she assessed it.”

However, the situation took a dark turn when Day began to undress, pulled down the window blind, and proceeded to rape her despite her protests. The woman was described as being extremely upset during the assault, and later examinations by a police surgeon revealed bruising on her private parts, confirming the distress she experienced.

Day denied the allegations, claiming that the sexual activity was consensual. Despite his denial, the jury found him guilty of rape by a majority of 10-2. He was acquitted of the charge of attempted rape. The court heard that the woman was visibly distressed during the incident, and her injuries were consistent with her account.

Judge Abbas Mithani, QC, ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared and made it clear that Day was facing a significant prison term. Additionally, he ordered that Day must register as a sex offender. The defendant was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date, with the court emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the impact on the victim.
