TAXI DRIVER SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS FOR RAPE IN NOTTINGHAM
A taxi driver, Shapoor Ahmad Azimi, who picked up a 22-year-old woman from outside Propaganda nightclub in Nottingham city centre around 4am on Sunday, 18 October 2015, committed a serious crime.
Instead of driving her home, Azimi took her to a street in Lenton and raped her on the back seat of his vehicle, then left her stranded.
The woman contacted police, leading to Azimi's arrest and subsequent charges.
Following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court, he was found guilty of one count of rape and not guilty of the other.
On Monday, 25 April 2016, he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Detective Inspector Clare Dean commented that Azimi exploited the victim's vulnerability for his gratification and abandoned her, emphasizing that her welfare was a priority during the investigation.
She also expressed hope that the sentence would help her move past this traumatic experience.
