Shaleem Nazish, 24, of Warrington, kept and shared thousands of extremely harmful child abuse images and videos. While already under police investigation, he exchanged child rape images in a disturbing group chat, openly discussing sexually abusing children.
Unbeknownst to him, he was conversing with an undercover officer who eventually reported his actions, leading to his further arrest.
Nazish falsely claimed during police questioning that he was listening to a podcast when officers arrived at his home at 6 a.m.
on March 28, 2019.
He reportedly tried to hide data on his phone, claiming he was 'trying to pause the recording,' but officers detected he was attempting to alter or delete data.
They forcibly seized his mobile device after he refused to comply.
During the search, officers found numerous indecent images on his phone, laptop, and another phone.
Nazish admitted that he viewed indecent images of children online but insisted he didn't remember uploading such images to his device.
The evidence revealed he had downloaded 936 Category A images depicting children being raped along with 1,123 Category B images and 4,412 Category C images, plus 28 prohibited images.
Among these were 296 videos of children aged between six months and 12 years being raped.
In police interviews, Nazish revealed he had previously sought help from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and probation services after his initial conviction but admitted he had struggled since then.
He also confessed to having a sexual interest in boys aged 8 to 12.
Despite being under investigation, Nazish engaged in a group chat where he shared and discussed indecent images across multiple platforms, using various usernames.
He openly talked about sexually abusing children.
He was re-arrested following this activity and told officers that his mental health issues, despite counselling, had worsened, leading him to continue his offending behavior.
Nazish admitted to sharing indecent images via Snapchat and a Wickr account, messaging others with similar interests, and downloading images from Instagram, subsequently moving them to different accounts.
Between April and June 2020, he distributed 11 Category A images, 13 Category B images, and 162 Category C images involving children aged 8 to 12.
His defense lawyer, Michael Phillips, explained that Nazish moved to the UK in 2002 and suffered a traumatic experience just prior to his arrival.
He expressed that Nazish feels deep shame and guilt and has struggled to stay on a lawful path despite efforts to improve.
Mr.
Phillips highlighted that a supervising officer initially found Nazish well-behaved, which was seen as a red flag.
Nazish’s childhood was marked by low self-esteem, frequent school changes, and feeling isolated as often the only Asian student.
He earned a chemistry degree from UCLAN with aspirations in vaccine research.
His previous conviction in 2016 resulted in a two-year suspended sentence.
Since then, he has faced difficulty finding employment, exacerbated by ongoing mental health issues including anxiety and depression.
Following his latest guilty pleas admitting to making, possessing, and distributing indecent images of children between December 2014 and June 2020 Nazish was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.
Recorder Eric Lamb acknowledged his genuine remorse and desire to change but emphasized the necessity of ongoing restrictions.
Nazish was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and ordered to abide by a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order and to register as a sex offender for life.
