FAILED ASYLUM SEEKER DETAINED AFTER BRUTAL MANSLAUGHTER OF KIND WOMAN IN NORTH YORKSHIRE
Shahin Darvish-Narenjbon, aged 34, a failed asylum seeker from Iran, has been placed in indefinite detention within a psychiatric facility following the murder of 87-year-old Brenda Blainey at her residence in North Yorkshire. The incident took place on 5 January 2022, when Darvish-Narenjbon stabbed Mrs.
Blainey, with whom he had been staying, in what was described as an act of "appalling brutality." Mrs.
Blainey had previously extended kindness to him by offering shelter during his studies for a Master’s degree.
During the court proceedings, Judge Rodney Jameson indicated that Darvish-Narenjbon could pose a "lifelong serious risk to the public." While he admitted to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, the court took into account his mental health issues, notably a history of schizophrenia, which had deteriorated his behavior with each relapse.
The court also noted his arrival in the UK at age 15 to pursue education, and that both his asylum application and subsequent appeal had been denied.
It was established that at the time of the killing, Darvish-Narenjbon was suffering from severe mental illness, including a psychotic episode during which he assaulted Mrs.
Blainey with a kitchen knife—banging her head, slashing her throat, hitting her, and stabbing her in the chest.
Mrs.
Blainey, who was in the early stages of dementia and had become more frail over time, was found dead at her home in Thornton-le-Dale.
A police source confirmed she had lost her life after showing "immense kindness to a young man who she identified was in need of support." Although the court recognized his mental health difficulties, Darvish-Narenjbon was sentenced to a hospital order with mental health restrictions, indicating some responsibility for his actions despite his impairments.
