Druids Heath Animal Abuser
Selina Shepherd, a resident of Bells Lane in Druids Heath, Birmingham B14, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet dog, Lola, after neglecting her for over a week. The incident, which took place in 2018, drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities and the local community alike.

According to court records, Shepherd, who also performs as a singer under the stage name Selena Mai, failed to seek veterinary assistance for Lola after the dog was hit by a car on September 1, 2018. The accident occurred when Lola managed to escape through an unlocked gate, leading to her being struck by a vehicle. Instead of taking immediate action to help her injured pet, Shepherd chose to attempt a homemade fix, using a splint to stabilize Lola’s broken leg.

What followed was a distressing period of neglect, during which Lola was left to suffer in pain for eleven days. It was only when a concerned member of the public noticed her condition and reported it to the RSPCA that intervention was made. Inspector Jonathan Ratcliffe responded to the call and visited Shepherd’s home. During his visit, he encountered hostility from Shepherd, which necessitated calling the police for assistance.

Inspector Ratcliffe described Lola’s condition, stating, “She was struggling to walk and could not bear any weight on that leg, she was clearly in pain.” He further explained that he took Lola to a veterinary clinic, where it was discovered that her fracture had worsened due to the lack of treatment over the nine days since the injury occurred. The severity of her injury was such that there was a real concern she might need to have her leg amputated. Fortunately, thanks to the veterinary team’s efforts, Lola’s leg was saved, and surgery was successful.

Despite her pet’s suffering, Shepherd refused to relinquish Lola to the RSPCA for rehoming. Instead, Lola was placed in the charity’s care for 14 months, during which time she received the necessary treatment and rehabilitation. The case was ultimately brought to court, where Shepherd faced sentencing. She received a 12-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, along with a fine totaling £315 covering costs and charges. Additionally, she was banned from keeping any animals for a period of ten years, a ban that will expire in 2028.

This case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the obligation to seek prompt veterinary care when animals are injured or suffering. Inspector Ratcliffe emphasized that there is no justification for neglecting an animal’s suffering, especially in cases involving serious injuries like Lola’s. The outcome of this case not only ensures Lola’s future safety but also serves as a reminder that neglect will be met with legal consequences.
