SEBRINA CARTY FROM RICHMOND HILL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY INVOLVING PUPPY FALLING FROM LEEDS BALCONY
In a disturbing incident that shocked the local community, Sebrina Carty, also known as Sebrina Buttimer, a resident of Milner Gardens in Richmond Hill, Leeds LS9 8NW, was involved in an act of severe animal cruelty that garnered significant attention from authorities and animal welfare organizations alike.According to court records, the incident occurred during a heated argument between Carty and her boyfriend. In a moment of rage, she threw her seven-week-old Jack Russell Terrier, named Rocky, off a three-storey-high balcony. Rocky was placed inside a dog carrier at the time of the fall. Despite the gravity of her actions, the tiny dog survived the fall, which could have easily resulted in fatal injuries.
The police were called to Carty’s previous residence on Appleton Square in Leeds in October 2008, following reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers discovered the aftermath of the incident: the shattered remains of Rocky’s pet carrier and the injured puppy lying nearby. Emergency veterinary services were summoned immediately, and Rocky was transported to a local vet for treatment.
The veterinarian examined Rocky and found that he had suffered soft tissue damage and bruises but thankfully no broken bones. The incident was thoroughly investigated, and Carty was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the puppy. Her sentence included a community order, which mandated 100 hours of unpaid work, a fine of £250 to cover costs, and a two-year ban on keeping animals, which expired in 2011.
RSPCA inspector Dave Holgate expressed his outrage over the case, describing it as a “sickening case of deliberate and sadistic cruelty.” He emphasized the vulnerability of the young puppy, noting that Rocky was only a few weeks old and must have been terrified during the ordeal. Inspector Holgate also highlighted the importance of the court’s decision, stating, “The sentence passed reflects the serious nature of this incident and serves to show that this kind of vile cruelty cannot and will not be tolerated.”
Fortunately, Rocky made a full recovery from his injuries and was adopted into a new, caring home. The case serves as a stark reminder of the cruelty that some individuals are capable of, and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and animal welfare groups to protect vulnerable animals from harm.
