SEBASTINE LILIU SENTENCED FOR RAPE NEAR PORTSMOUTH'S ASTORIA NIGHTCLUB
Sebastine Kava Liliu, notably recognized as the first Solomon Islander to join the service, committed a serious sexual assault in Portsmouth that has left a lasting impact on his victim.The incident occurred in the early hours of February 11, just after 1am, when Liliu targeted a vulnerable woman in the bushes located mere yards from The Astoria nightclub on Winston Churchill Avenue.
The assault was brutal and took place in a secluded area, highlighting the predatory nature of the crime.
Following the attack, Liliu abandoned the victim, who was left in tears and visibly distressed.
The police investigation quickly mobilized, and officers in the area identified the victim's distress shortly after the incident.
This prompt response led to the arrest of Liliu, who was subsequently charged with rape.
During legal proceedings at Portsmouth Crown Court, Liliu, who has no fixed address, admitted to the offence.

On Thursday, June 13, the court handed down a sentence of six years in prison to Liliu.
Additionally, he will be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
The presiding judge, Michael Bowes KC, emphasized the profound and lasting impact of Liliu’s actions, stating, “What you did that night has had a very profound effect on the aggrieved.
As well as the physical damage you caused, you have caused psychological harm that will remain with her for many years, and probably the rest of her life.” In a related development, a 28-year-old man from Portsmouth, who was initially detained on suspicion of rape during police inquiries, was released without charge and will face no further legal action.

DI Marcus Baker, from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s specialist Operation Amberstone team, issued a statement condemning Liliu’s conduct.
He said, “Today’s sentence sends a clear message that Sebastine Kava Liliu’s behaviour will not be tolerated.
He targeted a woman who was enjoying a night out and attacked her within twenty minutes of first coming into contact with her.
Our officers on patrol in the area identified that she was in a distressed state shortly afterwards and an investigation was immediately launched.” He further expressed hope that the case would serve as a deterrent and encourage other victims to come forward.
“I’m pleased that this sentence will finally provide some closure to his victim.
